He found employment with UP Brahmins who were dispensing paani poori from streetside carts. Having learnt the trade, he struck out on his own with a pushcart in Nagarathpet in 1950, infusing North Indian style chaats with local flavours. His son, Kumar continues the tradition under the shade of a temple peepal tree, which also gives his very popular chaat shop its name, Arali Mara, peepal tree in Kannada.
